Preparing Your Appearance: How to Look Your Best on Camera

Looking beautiful on camera is different from looking beautiful in person. When you book your engagement photos, bridal portrait session, or wedding photography with us, preparing your appearance thoughtfully will ensure your images capture the absolute best version of yourself. Here's our guide to looking camera-ready for your session.
Start with Skincare
Begin your skincare routine at least one week before your session. This gives any potential breakouts time to heal and allows your skin to achieve its most natural glow. Hydrate consistently by drinking plenty of water, and avoid trying any new skincare products in the days immediately before your shoot. If you struggle with sensitive skin, we recommend consulting with a dermatologist beforehand.
Hair Preparation
Schedule any haircuts or color treatments at least two weeks before your session. This timing allows your hair to settle and look its most natural. If you're planning an updo for your bridal portrait or wedding day, do a practice run before your session so you know exactly how it will look and feel. Bring reference photos to your appointment so your stylist understands your vision clearly.
Makeup for the Camera
The camera reads makeup differently than our eyes do. Matte finishes often photograph better than shiny ones, and slightly bolder makeup typically translates well to the lens. If you're uncomfortable applying makeup yourself, consider booking a professional makeup artist who has experience with photography sessions. They'll understand how to enhance your features for the camera while keeping everything looking natural in your final images.
Clothing Choices
Your wardrobe significantly impacts your photos. For engagement sessions, consider coordinating with your partner through color palettes rather than matching outfits. Solid colors and quality fabrics typically photograph better than busy patterns. For bridal portraits, choose a dress or outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Avoid overly loose or overly tight clothing that might look unflattering when sitting or moving.
Understanding Your Undertones
Pay attention to your undertones when selecting colors. Warm undertones photograph beautifully in gold, warm creams, and rich earth tones. Cool undertones shine in silver, jewel tones, and cool whites. Bring several outfit options if you're unsure, and we can help you decide on the day.
Confidence and Posture
While we'll guide you through poses during your session, maintaining good posture beforehand helps your body feel natural and comfortable in front of the camera. Practice smiling and expressions in the mirror so you feel prepared and confident. Get good rest the night before your session—well-rested eyes and skin make an incredible difference in your final images.
These preparation steps ensure that when we capture your engagement photos, bridal portraits, or wedding day moments, you'll look and feel your absolute best.
